Debenhams Reveals Shoppers are Pocketing Luggage Charges

Debenhams has revealed that instead of paying expensive charges for stowing cases in the hold of the plane, canny holidaymakers are using their free hand luggage allowance and "wearing" the rest of their baggage. The fashion retailer has seen sales of coats and jackets with multiple pockets rise by as much as 350% over the summer holiday period.

The retailer is putting the new trend down to reports from the shop floor that customers prefer to pack heavier items such as books, towels, electronic net books and cameras, into large pocketed garments, rather than pay fees up to ?40 return charged by some low-cost airlines for suitcases (http://www.debenhams.com/home-furniture/luggage/suitcases ) stowed in the hold.

As a result, sales of Debenhams' John Rocha (http://www.debenhams.com/designers/john-rocha ) navy blue parka with six pockets have gone up by 350% and sales of the beige Mantaray five pocket bomber jackets, which even have a discreet pocket in the sleeve, have jumped by 200%. Sales of Debenhams Mantaray shower proof coat with 7 pockets have also leapt by 181%.

Carie Barkhuizen, spokeswoman for Debenhams, said: "Worn strategically, multi-pocket coats and trousers can offer up to 10 pockets to stow everything from spare pants and socks, to bikinis and sarongs. It's traveling light like we have never seen before.

"Our sales assistants have even reported some customers coming in with specific items like net-books and paperbacks, to check if they will fit in the pockets before they buy the coat or jacket."

Personal finance guru Martin Lewis points out on his Money Saving Expert website that each stowed bag on budget airlines costs between ?10 and ?40 return on top of the price of the ticket, but in most cases, passengers get a free 10kg hand luggage allowance. He encourages people to make the most of allowances by ensuring "… you're wearing your heaviest clothes, are multi-layered and your coat pockets are jammed with heavy items like books."

World Connect Revs Up for More Kids to Kids Grants in More Countries

World Connect, formerly Infante Sano, a nonprofit that empowers local leaders in underserved communities to solve local problems, today opened online voting for the next round of Kids to Kids grants. Members of Kids to Kids, a youth-led program, are invited to read and review proposed projects and chose which projects they want to fund. It is an amazing opportunity for kids to have a say in which projects they think will have the greatest impact in the lives' of other kids. The online voting will be open until June 30, 2010.

The Kids to Kids program uses money raised by students in the US to fund small but powerful grants at the community level in partner countries. For this latest round of grant giving, Kids to Kids received over 80 applications from Peace Corp Volunteers teaming with local community leaders in 10 countries. For the first time ever, Kids to Kids will fund projects in Ecuador, Mali, Morocco, Peru, Philippines and Rwanda.

"Reading and reviewing the grant proposals drives home the power of our actions," said Sarah Nuss, a co-founder of Kids to Kids. "With the online voting, all of our members learn exactly how a remote community works and what challenges kids there face. We encourage kids across the United States to join the process and help us determine where we can have the most impact on the lives of kids around the world."

Kids to Kids, which was founded in 2005 by four middle school aged girls from Massachusetts, funds arts, sports, education and environmental projects aimed at kids in underserved communities in Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa and Asia. The goal is to support community projects that can make simple but powerful changes to kids' lives. Below is sampling of projects up for consideration in this round:

Court of Smiles, Costa Rica--This project will benefit a small community of 1000+ people on the Nicoyan Peninsula of Guanacaste, Costa Rica. The community has developed rather quickly in the last 10 years with the construction of nearly 200 government homes. However, sadly, the community has very few resources for the youth. This is a serious problem considering over 30% of the population is between the ages of 5 and 17, and it is incredibly important for kids to have positive and healthy activities during this time of development. Through a Kids to Kids grant, we propose to construct a multi-use court for basketball, volleyball and other sports in community so that youth will be able to entertain themselves in a safe and healthy environment. Skills such as self-discipline, work ethic, responsibility, accountability, teamwork, leadership and self-confidence are all components of sports, valuable and urgent lessons for these youth.

Documenting Dreams, Dominican Republic--This project will incorporate digital photography into the elementary and high schools in a poor, rural community in the Dominican Republic. We are requesting a Kids to Kids grant to purchase digital cameras and a color printer. Students will have the opportunity to learn about journalism, photography, and community building through the sharing of information, which would be done first in blog form on the internet and later through publishing a community newspaper. Photography is a great way to motivate youth in the Dominican Republic because they rarely have the chance to see pictures of themselves or to use a camera. The cameras would allow students to learn important concepts, such as the importance of recording history and the power of communication – and a variety of new creative skills. The project will achieve a lasting, positive impact on kids in community because it will help foster a joy of learning that is so often lost in the Dominican Republic.

Rihane Screenprinters & Fashion Designers, Morocco --Rihane was founded as a community learning center for girls who are illiterate or who have little schooling. This center offers free educational and craft classes such as sewing, cooking, and crocheting - empowering these young women to develop skills and be more independent. With support from Kids to Kids, Rihane will provide the girls with an opportunity to better their screen-printing skills, encourage their creativity, and produce unique clothes that they themselves can wear in their village. Girls will develop their business skills by advertising and selling their clothes. Clothes created by the girls will also be sold in the surrounding communities as a way to keep the project going for many years to come.

Homebuilder Kicks off Annual Not-So-Random Acts of Kindness Charity Drive

Every year at this time Wayne Homes brings the community together and makes the holidays brighter for those in need. The homebuilder calls it, "Not-So-Random Acts of Kindness." And the idea is women's jackets to help a variety of charities in Ohio and Pittsburgh by getting everyone involved: homebuyers, Wayne Homes employees and trade partners; and the general public.

"The slow-moving economic recovery is why, more than ever, people need to pitch in and help local charities," says Bill Post, Wayne Homes Principal and Chief Operating Officer. "So we just try to make it easier for people to help their fellow humans."

Each Wayne Homes Model Center becomes a drop-off point for contributions to a selected local charity. Depending on the charity, the public is encouraged to bring everything from clothing and food to school supplies and hygienic products.

The charities benefitting from this year's drive include The Battered Women's Shelter of Summit and Medina Counties, Ashland County Toys for Tots, Erie County Children's Services, Portage County Toys for Tots, The YES Club, Alicia's Voice, and the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank.

"You'd be surprised how many people really want to contribute," says Post, "By giving people central drop-off locations and detailed instructions on what to bring, it makes the whole process painless and even fun."

Wayne customers get into the action simply by buying a home, something they wanted to do anyway. Wayne makes a $100 contribution to the buyer's charity of choice when the customer signs a contract before the end of the year.

This year, in addition to the annual intra-corporate-office competition to raise money for charity, the departments are engaged in a fierce food-donation-box decorating contest. Holiday box photos can be found on Wayne Homes' Facebook page and "like" votes will determine the winner. Voting is open to everyone. The winners get pizza.

"Decorating the food collection boxes is just a fun way to get people excited about the food-drive," says Maurie Jones, Wayne Homes' Marketing Vice President. "And help get the word out."

Meanwhile these festive boxes, and many others, are filling with non-perishable food to support OPEN M, the Opportunity for People Everywhere in Need Ministry. OPEN M is a faith-based non-profit that helps people in the Akron area living with minimal resources.

OPEN M's goal is to collect 2,350 food items: cans of beef stew, peas, pork-and-beans; jars of spaghetti sauce, peanut butter and jelly; packages of hamburger helper, rice dinners, pasta; and staples like bags of sugar and vegetable oil.

With JC Penney's new pricing structure echoing that of Walmart's EDLP model women's coats , the most recent Retail Ratings Reports from BIGinsight? indicate both retailers could face challenges when it comes to Women's Clothing. For years Walmart has led Kohl's in the Women's Clothing category, however in November of 2011, Kohl's surpassed the discounter and the two have been tangling for the top position ever since.

Although a tie was recorded in May, Kohl's has maintained the lead for the majority of 2012, giving the Bentonville behemoth cause for concern in the Women's Clothing sector. This trend could be attributed to a consumer who appears to be thinking more towards selection, quality and brand yet who is still economically minded. A majority enjoy shopping for sales and discounts, often turning apparel shopping into a "sport," finding quality and name brands that still fit within budgets. Lacking the thrill of the hunt in this category, Walmart seems to be struggling to obtain new customers, a possible foreshadowing of what's in store for JC Penney.

"Mainstream shoppers still need to feel like they scored a deal when buying apparel and this generally isn't achieved with a low price," said Pam Goodfellow, Consumer Insights Director, BIGinsight?. "Shoppers still crave coupons, specials, and sales to drive them into stores, to try on new merchandise and make them feel OK about spending on this 'luxury.'"

The growing divide between retailers offering EDLP (Walmart, JCP) and department stores becomes more apparent by applying the Consumer Equity Index? (CEI). The latest CEI ratings for Women's Clothing show that Kohl's and Macy's are growing in customer share, while Walmart and JC Penney are flatlining. In the all-important female shopper segment, Kohl's share has risen 14%, Macy's has boosted a whopping 43%, while Walmart and JC Penney have each dropped 5%.

Top Designer Fashion House Yves Saint Laurent Reveals New Logo

For designer fashion lovers, Yves Saint Laurent ha women's jackets ndbags, clothing and accessories are among the most desired luxury items available. The company drew a bit of backlash, however, after it announced that its ready-to-wear line would be retitled Saint Laurent Paris, one of several changes initiated by the iconic label's new creative director, Hedi Slimane. "I think this is a slap in the face of one of the greatest designers [that] will ever walk this earth," one commenter wrote on the Saint Laurent's Facebook page. In addition to the name change, the label's logo has been given a makeover; its iconic YSL logo replaced with the Saint Laurent Paris name written in small white letters. "Yes, this was originally what he named his company but the fact that they're changing it back and removing his first name [post death] just seems straight up disrespectful," the commenter continued.

Despite the opposition, Slimane presses forward in his efforts to rebrand the company. This September, he will unveil the spring/summer Resort 2013 collection, his first for the label, during Paris Fashion Week.

"I approach this via a wardrobe codified to the extreme, almost ritualistic," Slimane told WWD, adding that, under his direction, the brand would be placing more emphasis on its ready-to-wear line. "Haute Couture is a legitimate subject for Yves Saint Laurent and could resume one day. The priority today is to revamp and redeploy the luxury ready-to-wear."

Slimane, a newcomer to women's clothing, does have one very notable name in his corner: Yves Saint Laurent co-founder Pierre Bergé. During a recent interview with WWD, Bergé expressed confidence in Slimane, convinced the creative director could restore the brand to glory.

"I'm very happy," Bergé said, dismissing the tenure of past YSL decision makers. "Anything that makes the house more Saint Laurent is welcome ... I am happy that Stefano Pilati is gone, just as I was happy when Tom Ford left."
